In the early summer of 1975, with the beginning of the expansion of foreign companies’ activities in Iraq in the fields of reconstruction and investment, Engineer Abdul Amir Al-Moussawi began working in the contracting sector and supplying foreign companies operating in Iraq with construction materials.
At that time, Iraq was experiencing a boom in business and construction, and this openness contributed to the continuation and expansion of Engineer Abdul Amir Al-Moussawi’s work until the end of the 1980s.
After the start of the Second Gulf War in 1990, many foreign companies left Iraq, and the economic embargo led to a significant decline in the markets in general. However, the experience that Engineer Abdul Amir Al-Moussawi had gained was not lost under these suffocating circumstances, so he turned to opening a showroom for selling construction materials, especially iron pipes and their accessories. This showroom was named (Atlas Showroom) and was opened in Baghdad, in the Al-Shaab area, where the main market specialized in pipes and their wholesale and retail accessories is located.
The Iraqi markets faced great economic problems between 1990 and 2003, during which Iraq’s openness to the external market was almost nonexistent. Nevertheless, (Atlas Showroom) continued its work and activities, and this activity expanded with government agencies. The showroom became one of the distributors of the General Company for Trading Construction Materials and one of its important channels in meeting the Iraqi market’s demands for construction materials. In addition, the showroom played an important role in supplying a large number of projects and was one of the most important suppliers for Baghdad Municipality projects at that time.
The main turning point in (Atlas Showroom)’s activity was after 2003, as for the first time, the founder of the showroom began seeking to obtain special agencies from several reputable international companies to introduce their goods to Iraq under the name (Atlas Plast) Company. The company also supplied large reconstruction projects in Iraq with all kinds of pipes and their accessories from the most prominent global sources and the most famous and reputable brands, especially European ones.
The expansion in (Atlas Plast)’s work led to several important commercial partnerships, including its partnership with businessman Mr. Mahmoud Al-Jaf. This partnership contributed in 2004 to Masari Company obtaining an exclusive agency from the German company (Banninger), one of the most famous global companies in the field of pipe manufacturing and their accessories. This expansion also led to deepening trust and communication between (Atlas Plast) and traders and agents in the Iraqi market, as well as gaining consumer confidence.
Despite the unstable security situation in Iraq during 2006-2007, Atlas Plast did not cease its operations and activities. The company relocated to the city of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, where Engineer Jaafar Al-Musawi, the eldest son of Engineer Abdul Amir, took over the management of the business. In Sulaymaniyah, Engineer Jaafar Al-Musawi formed a new partnership with businessman Mr. Abdul Razzaq Al-Hayali in 2007, and together they established the Erbak factory for the production of PVC pipes. The factory supplied the Iraqi market until 2015, when the absence of government legislation and incentives to support local products affected the factory’s ability to compete with the prices of foreign products. This led Atlas Plast to abandon the factory, which had been relied upon to support local industries and products.
The security situation in Baghdad began to improve at the beginning of 2008, and Atlas Plast management returned to work in the capital with a new, more effective strategy. In 2009, the company established a private company for the trade of pipes and accessories under the name Ufuq Alatlas Company. The company then opened a branch in Erbil in 2010 with a separate commercial registration under the name Jaafar Abdul Amir Kazem Company, to cover the markets of the region and manage the company’s strategic warehouses in Erbil.
Believing in effective partnerships, Atlas Plast entered into a partnership with Mr. Mohammed Jasib, one of the most prominent pipe traders in Iraq, in 2009. This partnership resulted in the establishment of Al-Ameer Sanitaryware Showroom in the Al-Shaab area of Baghdad, which took on the task of selling and distributing the Saudi brand Fabco.
At the beginning of 2012, the company opened a branch in the city of Basra to meet the increasing demand for its products in the southern market of Iraq. In the same year, and to expand its commercial activities and form larger partnerships with foreign companies, Engineer Abdul Amir Al-Musawi established a new company under the name Qimam Atlas Company.
In 2018, Atlas Plast, in partnership with Spark Company (agents of Vitra), opened a Vitra agency branch in the capital, Baghdad, in the Camp Sarah market, which specializes in sanitaryware.
In the same year, 2018, Atlas Plast established advanced warehouses and storage facilities for its products, with large spaces inside Baghdad reaching 20,000 square meters, with modern construction, including 10,000 square meters of closed warehouses and 10,000 square meters of open warehouses. The facility includes modern machinery, a high-level fire protection system, and an environmentally friendly solar lighting system.
In mid-2019, Atlas Plast entered into a significant partnership with the Turkish company Turan Makina, specializing in the sale of polyethylene products and machinery used in infrastructure projects.
